My Anvils
Here are a few pictures of my newest anvil. I'm trying to identify it. If you have any clue as to what it might be please let me know. When first looking at it, I thought that it was a Peter Wright based on the look of the feet, but there are no markings on it anywhere, and all Peter Writes are marked as far as I know. It may be a cheap knock off, it's hard to say. I will weigh it next week, but I am pretty sure it is over 200lb.
It is 12" tall and has an overall length of 31 1/2 inches. The face is 19 1/4" by 4 1/2". It has a 1 1/4" hardy hole, and no pritchel hole. The base is 10 3/4" by 11 1/2"
You can see the parting line down the center. It is definetly a cast anvil. I think it is cast steel, because it rings very nicely. Also, it doesn't seem to have any kind of face plate. I thought when I was first looking at it that someone had simply ground the edges to square them up, but now that I have cleaned it off, I am thinking that it may actually be a brand new anvil that was a factory reject. The hardy hole is not set squarely in the face. it is slightly cocked. Also, the fact that all of the parting lines are still visable, and there are no markings on it anywhere. All of the edges are in perfect shape like its never been used. Even the hardy hole has clean square edges. The horn is also rough shaped only with the parting line clearly visable. Even the bottom is still pretty rough. This all leads me to believe that it is a factory reject that someone got ahold of then did nothing with. I plan to clean the face and horn, then try it out a bit. Hopefully, it will be usable.

Here it after a day of wire brushing and some grinding.
Here is the whole face. You can see it needs some work. The center is about 16th in high. |
Here is the horn. Same deal as the face. It needs some grinding. |
Here is the only kind of mark on it. This looks like they would have stamped it on the flat there. |
Here is a close up of the face near the horn. |
Here is a close up of the face at the heel. You can see that the hardy hole is slightly off square. I was able to put a piece of 1 1/4" square bar into it though. It is pretty close to square, just not straight with the anvil. |
Below is my Peter Wright 130lb anvil.

This is what it looks like now. The set of pictures below are what it looked like when I got it. I didn't do any welding on it, I just sanded it smooth with a belt sander. |

Below are the pics of it when I first got it.

These 3 pics are from the ebay listing where I bought the anvil. You can see that none of them are too close. |

Here is a closer shot down the face before I started sanding it. |
Here is what it looked like after taking the rust off with a power wire wheel. There's not a non marked spot on the whole face, but the edges are all there. |
Here is another shot before I started cleaning it up. It rang real nice before I mounted it. |
Here are a couple of shots of the mark on the side of the anvil. |
You can see that a lot of it is gone, but you can still see enough to tell it's a Peter Wright. |
This is the face after belt sanding. I have been using it for several months since taking this pic and it is working good for me. |
